Artist Statement - 2023
Joshua Reiman
I believe in well-made objects, captivating cinematic experiences, and knowing the processes involved in creating thought-provoking physical spatial works of art. My work addresses themes of cultural identity through conceptual and material inquiry. Fictional and historical narratives can frame or scaffold an artwork. These are curious problems that entangle my work and my research.
My practice stands at a crossroads of theatrical simulation and challenging assumptions embedded within stereotypes and everyday life. I use iconic figures from art, history, and politics to anchor new narratives at the junction of absurdity, where reality and fiction meet. Making art has been a catalyst for me to share my understanding and interests within this complex world we live in. My work involves transforming reality into a visual synthesis of what is real, fake and imagined.
